Yandex Weather head Alexander Ganshin said that the appearance of white nights at the beginning of summer is associated with the rotation of the Earth around its axis and the Sun, as well as the tilt of the planet’s axis.

This phenomenon is observed in northern latitudes in summer: the sun briefly goes below the horizon, and then begins to rise back almost immediately. At latitudes above the Arctic Circle, white nights last two to four weeks – before the start of the polar day and after it ends. So, this year, white nights in Yakutia last for almost three months, from May 12 to August 1.

At other latitudes, they appear during and before the summer solstice – June 21. On this day, the Sun never sets north of the 66.5° parallel. During this period, white nights can be seen even in Moscow, but not as bright as in other cities. Ganshin noted that in 2024, the white night on June 22 can be seen in Volgograd and Rostov-on-Don.

Due to the length of daylight hours, white nights disrupt sleep patterns for many people. Help those who can help normalize sleep, such as the meteorologist, masks and blackout curtains.
