The non-profit organization GSM Association (GSMA) reported that more than 5 billion and unused smartphones and phones have been copied around the world.
On this occasion, the GSMA, with the support of 12 operators from different countries, including Tele2 and Orange, deliberately partially changes the devices used. They are planned to be processed, since they contain 50 tons of copper, 500 tons of silver and 100 thousand tons of gold. At the same time, cobalt from unnecessary devices will be enough to produce batteries for 10 million electric vehicles.
According to the organization, leaving such a huge number of phones idle is a waste. They can be channeled in the right direction and reduce the decline by reducing the amount of new metals and re-introduction.
By 2030, operators will accept for recycling at least 20% of the devices also sold, and recycle 100% of the phones they hand over. This measure will not completely solve the issue of defeat, but at least partially ease the flow – yes. [GSMA]
