The research team collected Twitter posts discussing various scientific topics and found that GPT-3 tweets were virtually indistinguishable from human content. The aim of the study was to determine whether people could distinguish human-written tweets from GPT-3 generated tweets. Participants showed higher levels of confidence in GPT-3 regardless of the accuracy of the information provided.
However, the study acknowledges some limitations, such as participants rating tweets out of context and unable to view profiles to assess authenticity. Overall, the study highlights the need to improve training datasets to effectively combat disinformation campaigns.
