Researchers from Perm have developed a device project for automatic analysis for the presence of infectious diseases in humans and animals, especially chlamydia. The scientists’ work has been published in the journal WSEAS Transactions On Information Science And Applications.

Chlamydial infection is a disease that can be accompanied by itching and burning in the genitals, fever, severe pain in the lower abdomen and other symptoms. It is possible to detect the presence of bacteria causing this from the structural changes in the cell tissues. Until now, all stages of histological analysis were performed manually in most cases. This not only complicates the diagnosis, but also increases the time to take measures to prescribe treatment, said Natalya Tatarnikova, head of the Department of Infectious Diseases of Perm State Technical University, one of the researchers.

Sergey Kostarev, Professor of the Department of Information Technologies and Automated Systems at the PNRPU, the express analyzer developed by scientists makes it possible to carry out all stages of the study, from loading the studied biomaterial to diagnosis. The device consists of two blocks – the preparation of the histological sample and the recognition of morphological changes in tissues.

The biomaterial processing unit allows you to prepare a section, trim it and stain it with reagents. The module for recognizing the diagnosis of tissue pathology includes a light microscope, and software – a neural network. Oksana Novikova, a professor in the Department of Animal Sciences of the Perm Institute of the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service, said experiments have shown that the probability of recognizing the presence of infections is between 80% and 90%.

The scientists plan to present the device next year. In their opinion, the development will solve the problem of the lack of highly qualified personnel for histological analysis.
