Researchers from Mordovia State University. NP Ogareva has developed capsules that can be used to deliver drugs to the desired part of the gastrointestinal tract.

Patients injected with antibiotics in hospitals almost always suffer from an imbalance in their intestinal flora. Their intestines go bankrupt, and the food they take is almost not absorbed. Antibiotic-associated diarrhea can be treated with probiotics, which are live microorganisms that improve health.

But getting them to their “destination” is difficult – some may die as they pass through the acidic environment of the stomach. Scientists from Russia have proposed a solution to the problem by encapsulating probiotics.

The composition of the last components of both polysaccharide nature – bacterial cellulose, alginate, chitosan and protein – gelatin. Their ratio can be changed, allowing targeted drug delivery. After entering the intestine, microorganisms are completely released from the shell, and the drug acts more efficiently.

Simulations conducted by scientists of the capsule’s passage through the gastrointestinal tract showed that the capsule remained in the stomach for two to four hours. One of the researchers, a teacher at the Department of Biotechnology, Biochemistry and Bioengineering of Moscow State University, only then passes into the intestines, where the drug is gradually released.
