This technically difficult maneuver was chosen because of the desire to restore the technology and knowledge of the 1960s, when the USSR actively explored the Moon. Space Policy Institute President Ivan Moiseev emphasized that many of the technologies used at that time are now forgotten and the main purpose of the mission is to soft landing on the moon and to study the soil using scientific instruments.
Landing at the South Pole is a technical challenge due to the complex flight path and the need to account for the gravitational fields of the Moon and Earth. Previously, landings were made in the mid-latitudes of the Moon, and the change of landing site makes the mission even more ambitious.
Luna-25 will be the first Russian lunar station in the last 50 years.
