Scientists from the AF Ioffe Physical-Technical Institute (PTI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences have proposed a new way to use the spin of the smallest particles to transmit information in completely new types of electronics. They created a special “waveguide” – it is like a wire, but instead of an electric charge it transmits return waves in the right direction. Thus, the information encoded in these waves can be transmitted. This technique could be key for future devices based on spintronics, a more efficient and compact alternative to classical electronics.

Conventional electronic devices using electron charges have reached their limits in terms of power, compactness and energy efficiency. A new spintronic approach uses the spin of particles called “spins” instead of charges. This feature allows you to theoretically create spin waves where information can be transmitted like current in wires.

However, controlling these spin waves turned out to be a difficult task. Experts from the Physicotechnical Institute have developed a way to activate and control spin waves using a special magnetic material and laser pulses. This allows you to focus the waves in the right direction and transmit information precisely from one point to another through the created waveguide. It is important to note that the materials used for this approach, such as iron and nickel, are widely available.

This approach may find its application in future computing devices based on spintronic principles. It allows information to be transmitted in compact waveguides using common materials such as iron and nickel. This opens up new possibilities for the development of more efficient and powerful electronics that could revolutionize computing.
