The Russian GS Group plans to start production of substrates for processors in the Kaliningrad region by the end of 2024.
Substrates are one of the components of processors. All other parts of the chip are attached to it, and on the outside of its connectors for connectors with a separate board.
The production of substrates for modern processors is very technologically advanced and requires industrial equipment, materials, and highly qualified personnel.
Andrey Evdokimov, CEO of Baikal Electronics
The substrates are made from silicon wafers. Chips require 200–300 mm wafers, which are not produced in Russia.
Kommersant’s source believes that an investment of $100 million will be required. [Коммерсантъ]
