The station “Luna-25” ceased to exist. According to Roskosmos, the spacecraft went into an undesigned orbit and collided with the moon.

The Luna-25 mission failed due to the collision of the station with the surface of the moon

According to Roskosmos, on August 19, according to the flight program of the Luna-25 station, an impetus was provided for the formation of an elliptical orbit prior to the landing of the spacecraft. The impulse was issued at 14:10 Moscow time.

“At approximately 14:57 Moscow time, communication with the Luna-25 spacecraft was interrupted,” the message reads.

According to the results of a preliminary analysis, the actual parameters of the impulse differed from the calculated ones, so Luna-25 switched to an off-design orbit and ceased to exist as a result of a collision with the lunar surface.

“Measures taken on August 19-20 to search for the device and enter into communication with it did not produce any results,” the Roscosmos press service notes.

The company reports that a specially formed interdepartmental commission will deal with the issues of finding out the reasons for the loss of the station.

On August 19, Roskosmos announced an “abnormal situation” that prevented the Luna-25 station from entering the pre-landing orbit with the given parameters.
