Concerns about possible competition with Google’s other hardware divisions led to the project’s secrecy. An article in South Korea’s SBS Biz newspaper suggests that Samsung is tightening its control over the project and may delay the headset until the middle of next year.
While Google’s head of AR programs, Mark Lukovsky, has recently stepped down, the company continues to explore the potential of AR glasses. It integrates Iris software into a project called Betty, which aims to create “Micro XR” software for such eyewear manufacturers.
However, with the Apple Vision Pro headset on the horizon, companies need to try to capture a market that doesn’t have many competitors yet.
