Scientists from Tomsk Polytechnic University have proposed a new way of burning fuel oil, which is used in the operation of more than 2 thousand boiler houses and 7 thermal power plants in Russia. They suggested using a water-oil mixture instead of pure fuel oil and placing the burners less than 10 degrees apart. This can reduce harmful emissions by 9-14% and make heat and electricity generation 10% more economical.
According to the researchers, this change in technology will allow the fuel to burn better and reduce the amount of harmful emissions. When 10% water is added to the mixture, the fuel droplets undergo micro-explosion; the water heats up faster and turns into steam, breaking the drop into smaller pieces.
Project manager Nikita Shlegel emphasized that existing equipment can be easily upgraded to this technology. This is the first step that demonstrates the practical value of this approach.
