MTS Bank, after reports of users’ personal data appearing online, denied the leak of banking secrets. The lender also claims that the published file contains card data from different issuers and believes it is likely a leak from a retailer or digital service.
Earlier, the Telegram channel “Information Leaks” reported that a database had appeared on the network in which, according to hackers, there was information about 1 million MTS Bank cardholders. The file contains TIN, citizenship, partial bank card data and their expiration dates. The attackers also claimed that they published only some of the information they had.
The credit institution stated that the merged database contains personal data of citizens and bank card numbers issued by different banks. This indicates that the breach did not occur at the bank itself, but, presumably, at retail companies or digital service providers that store and process users’ payment data in exactly this way.
The bank also assured that user data is not in danger.
- At the end of May 2022, the Ministry of Digital Transformation agreed on a bill that provides for the introduction of a fine of 1% of annual revenue and up to 3% if the company does not report the leak to Roskomnadzor in time.
- On June 6, the State Duma adopted in third reading amendments to the law “On Personal Data”: they introduce an obligation for all companies to report to Roskomnadzor about leaks of citizens’ personal information. Companies must report a breach to Roskomnadzor within 24 hours of discovering it, and within 72 hours of providing the results of the investigation and information on those responsible.
- In July, the agency began discussing options to mitigate a bill that would introduce fines for companies for leaking personal data.
A fine will now be imposed on legal persons for data breaches under art. 13.11 of the Code of Administrative Offenses is from 60 thousand to 100 thousand rubles, in case of recidivism – up to 500 thousand rubles.
