The essence of the method is as follows: the user needs to touch his fingers 10 times in front of the webcam. The system then evaluates motor function on a scale from 0 to 4.

Traditionally, clinicians ask patients to perform simple motor tasks to assess the severity of motor impairment. The new AI tool can quickly assess a patient’s condition using standard medical guidelines such as MDS-UPDRS.

A trial involving 250 patients with Parkinson’s disease showed that predictions obtained using artificial intelligence were comparable to predictions from three neurologists and three general practitioners.

Professional neurologists performed slightly better than the AI, but the cutting-edge technology outperformed UPDRS-certified general practitioners.
