According to the plans, Amazon will purchase 250,000 tons of carbon that will be removed from the atmosphere and stored underground. This initiative is part of Amazon’s strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040.
But not everything is that simple. Occidental Petroleum uses carbon dioxide removal technologies not only for environmental purposes but also for oil production.
This raises some concerns, as companies entering into such agreements may continue to pollute the atmosphere despite investing in green technologies.
Additionally, Amazon is investing in other companies that directly capture carbon dioxide from the air, such as CarbonCapture. They also claim that they do not plan to use their technology in conjunction with oil production.
The deal could be worth up to $150 million; This is a significant amount, but still not that impressive compared to Amazon’s overall emissions.
Experts estimate that the company emitted more than 71 million tons of carbon dioxide last year alone.
