The whitest white is not just an advertisement for bleach. get the whitest paint in the world this has been the goal and obsession of many scientists for many years. All kinds of methods based on nanotechnologies were tested until a method was obtained that could reflect 98.1% light. This is especially useful as it can be used to cool buildings without using electricity. This is something that has already been achieved, albeit experimentally. But the scientists behind the study wanted to go further and find a way cool planes and spaceships.

The science behind it is the same. The whitest paint in the world reflects most of the light falling on it, so it prevents the surfaces it covers from overheating. The problem is what to color aerodynamic structuress and that they continue to be, it is important that it be light. And the painting that existed until now, was not.

For this reason, the same scientists Purdue University who originally developed this white paint researched how to lighten the formula until they found an alternative that could be used for aircraft and spacecraft. Their results are published in Cell Reports Physical Science and the truth is that they are very promising.

This is the whitest paint in the world

Colors don’t exist. At least not as an independent object. In fact, they are the result of how our eyes process light reflecting off surfaces. When all light is absorbed, we see black. When all or almost all is reflected, the color is white. Finally, the rest of the colors will depend on the specific wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum that are reflected and absorbed.

Thus, we have seen that the white color results from the reflection of most of the light falling on the surface. But really, 100% not reflected. White surfaces, even those found in nature, reflect a high percentage of light, but not all of it. As for artificially created white paint, until recently, the whitest reflected 95% light. Later, these scientists from Purdue University came up to 98.1%.

They did it with acrylic base to which they added barium sulfate. This ingredient is an old friend of those who work with pigments. The more you add to the formula, the whiter the result will be. But there is a problem, because there comes a point when the mixture becomes saturated and the white paint becomes too brittle when it dries.

They found a solution using nanoparticles of different sizes, which are joined together, resulting in a patchy result, which in turn reflects much more light. But, unfortunately, it is too heavy for cooling aircraft such as aircraft.

Aircraft painting solution

The authors of the study noted that in order to use their white paint on aircraft, they must be able to apply a layer of no more than 400 microns thick. This was not possible with his original recipe. However, after several tests, they found that if they replaced the barium sulfate with boron nitride, the result was much better. True, they lost some reflection because dropped to 97.9%. But the loss was a trifle, especially considering that along with it got layers of white paint from 150 microns thick.

This is possible because boron nitride particles have a very peculiar structure known as nanoplatelets, which allows them to be grouped in thinner layers and in turn leave air pockets between them for a much lighter result. In fact, this new picture 80% less weight.

In short, it is the ideal formula for painting all types of vehicles. It is not only about air transport, such as aircraftbut also terrestrial, such as trains. All of them could keep cool on hot days without the usual need to turn the air conditioner up to penguin convention temperature. energy is saved and, of course, passengers will appreciate it.
