Google Vice President of Finance Michael Roszak said the company used the output of Apple Maps to determine what might trigger a Google search if Apple replaced it with another one in Safari.

The Apple Maps app came out in 2012 and replaced Google Maps, which was installed by default on all iPhones. Two years later, Google Maps mobile traffic has reached only 40% of its processing peak, Roszak said. The remaining 60% was distributed between Apple Maps and other services.

Google believes that the actual losses were greater because the number of iPhones and Apple Maps users increased.
