Russians will be able to pay in Cuba with cards from the Mir payment system, including rubles. This was announced by the Commissioner of the President of the Russian Federation for the protection of the rights of entrepreneurs Boris Titov.
According to Titov, Cuban banks managed to adapt the Russian payment system card to their POS terminals.
“In the near future we will start accepting payments for them, including rubles,” Titov announced.
The opportunity to use Mir cards in the Cuban capital appeared in the spring of 2023. As Titov states, the Cuban authorities hope that the introduction of the Mir system will help attract Russian tourists.
Since spring 2022, Russians cannot pay abroad with cards from Visa and Mastercard payment systems due to sanctions. According to data from early September, Mir cards were accepted in several countries, including Turkey, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Belarus, Armenia, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.
The issue of accepting Mir cards in Egypt and Sri Lanka was also discussed.
In the summer, the head of Sberbank, German Gref, announced his intention to develop an alternative to the Mir card operator.
