At the center of the debate is the technology for measuring blood oxygen levels, which was introduced to Apple Watch Series 6 in 2020. The legal fight between Apple and Masimo began after allegations that Apple used Masimo’s knowledge and expertise when developing its watches.

The US International Trade Commission (ITC) upheld the judge’s ruling that Apple’s use of the technology infringed Masimo’s patents. The ban could potentially affect all Apple Watch models with blood oxygen level monitoring.

But that action is subject to review by the Biden administration, which has 60 days to decide whether to veto the ban. Apple also has the opportunity to appeal the decision to the US Federal Court of Appeals.
