Cardiovascular diseases pose a serious threat to health, and restoring blood flow to organs and tissues in such diseases often requires the use of vascular prostheses. The institute noted that so far there is no effective prosthesis that can replace smaller diameter arteries, making this task difficult.
The scientists selected adult male baboons for experiments and successfully implanted 3 to 3.5 mm diameter vein grafts into their femoral arteries. This new prosthetic technology, based on biocompatible and thermoplastic polymers, has unique properties such as adaptive growth and protection against thrombus formation and aneurysms.
According to the project leader, Doctor of Medical Sciences Larisa Antonova, a new vessel grows in place of the resorbed prosthesis over time, ensuring long-term and effective restoration of blood flow.
