The study found that one in five patients taking Paclovid, an oral antiviral drug, had positive test results and shed live virus after recovery, compared with 2% of patients not taking Paclovid.
The study tracked viral loads, symptoms and sequenced patients. The findings underscore the need for patient counseling, but also support the effectiveness of Paclovid in reducing hospitalization and mortality in severe forms of COVID-19. Further research is planned to investigate the biological mechanisms underlying the relapse phenomenon associated with Paclovid use.
