What began in 1995 with about two dozen club members gathered around a table in a Venice library ended last month on Zoom with participants from around the world.
Known for its storytelling and linguistic acrobatics, the complex novel did not deter devoted readers. Over the years, the club has experienced changes in meeting venues, the loss of some members and the addition of new ones. The club, with nearly 20 members, survived during the pandemic by switching to meetings via Zoom.
Despite the mysterious nature of the book and its mid-sentence ending, the band members regret nothing. For them, traveling through Finnegans Wake “was the most satisfying experience of their lives” and the novel “changed their views on life, history, and imperfection.”
And yes, they decided to re-read this book because the full meaning of the work was never explained to them.
