Ashley Tosh, nutritionist at Prepped Pots, told Express.co.uk that some people don’t even realize that skipping meals often leads to weight gain rather than weight loss.

When the body goes into fasting mode, the body is more likely to store all those calories as fat when food is consumed. The risk of overeating at subsequent meals also increases.

The expert has listed seven factors that could cause skipping a meal to harm your health.

slow metabolism. If you don’t eat for a long time, your body goes into starvation mode. In this mode, the body tries to save energy by slowing down the metabolism. So when you eat, the body is more likely to store calories rather than burn them.

low blood sugar. This can then cause fatigue and dizziness. Additionally, when there is a lack of glucose, the brain does not work as efficiently, contributing to concentration problems and a greater tendency towards irritability.

Higher risk of overeating. Skipping meals can lead to extreme hunger later on. As a result, you’ll be more likely to eat something with lots of carbohydrates and sugar.

nutritional deficiencies. The most common symptoms of nutritional deficiency are severe hair loss, fatigue, bone pain, irregular heartbeat and oral health problems. It can also lead to more serious health problems such as anemia.

Dysfunction of hunger hormones. If you ignore your body’s hunger signals, your body will reduce its production of appetite-suppressing hormones. This can make it difficult to know when you’re full.

digestive problems. During long breaks between meals, irritation in the digestive system, diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, and constipation may occur due to the body’s stress response.

mental problems. Consistently skipping meals causes your body to produce more cortisol (the stress hormone). As a result, you’re more likely to experience mood swings, anxiety, and depression.
