The investigation, launched following a complaint from Halt Planned Obsolescence (HOP), aims to uncover the iPhone maker’s potentially misleading business practices.
HOP claims that Apple attaches serial numbers to smartphones using microchips, which can limit repairs to non-certified technicians or deliberately “break” devices repaired with non-standard components.
The association demands that Apple secure the right to repair devices and promote a more “sustainable and circular” economy.
Speaking of Apple, Macworld recently warned readers to be wary of rumors about the company’s products, shedding light on a recent disclosure by a prominent Apple employee.
