The 100-minute flight marked a critical step towards decarbonizing aviation and revealed the aircraft’s entire propulsion system, which consists of ePropellers, high-density batteries and a hybrid electric turbo-generator. Launched from Tarbes Airport, EcoPulse is a modified Daher TBM 900 aircraft equipped with six wing-mounted propellers, driven by 50 kilowatt Safran ENGINeUS electric motors.
The EcoPulse project aims not only to evaluate low-carbon aviation technologies, but also to improve the design of distributed propulsion aircraft, test a new high-voltage battery configuration, develop simulation models for larger aircraft, and evaluate aerodynamics to reduce drag.
Sabine Klauke, Airbus’ chief technology officer, emphasized the importance of high energy density batteries in reducing carbon emissions and said projects such as EcoPulse are key to pushing the aviation industry towards decarbonisation.
