He called it “extreme luck.” Gelsinger also suggested that if Intel had not abandoned one of its key projects almost 15 years ago, it would have been the “blue giant” that currently holds the leading position in AI hardware.

During a discussion at MIT, Intel’s president was asked what his company was doing to develop artificial intelligence. He stated that NVIDIA and CEO Jensen Huang were in the right place at the right time for this.

According to Gelsinger, NVIDIA was not initially planning to use its GPUs for artificial intelligence, and did not even want to support its first project in this field.
