In December 2023, Russians bought dollars and euros worth 179 billion rubles. This represents almost 10% more purchases in November. The Central Bank explains this demand for foreign currency among citizens by the seasonal factor: Christmas and long New Year holidays.
Russians bought the bulk of the currency (90.2 billion rubles) on the foreign exchange market and through the largest banks (88.8 billion rubles). This follows from the review of financial market risks carried out by the Bank of Russia, writes Vedomosti.
According to data from the regulator, the months in which citizens actively purchased currencies were March and October-December.
