Apple has allowed banking and payment app developers in the European Union to use NFC on iPhones running iOS 17.4.

This means that banks have the right to issue their own analogues of Apple Pay and not pay Apple fees for user transactions.

Users can also choose an app to launch when the iPhone is brought near an NFC terminal or when the side button is pressed twice.

Apple complied with industry security standards for applications that use NFC for payments, such as an agreement with an authorized payment service provider. [Apple]
