Current facial recognition technologies use projectors, but the new system uses a laser and a flat surface dotted with small columns (“metasurface”). This miniaturization allows reducing size and power consumption. This device projects 45,700 infrared recognition points while consuming 5 to 10 times less power than traditional systems.
In tests, the system correctly identified a 3D replica of Michelangelo’s David by matching its “bitmap” to photos on the internet.
The researchers plan to use the technology in robotics, augmented reality and other fields that require compact, low-power imaging solutions.
