The Walt Disney Company announced the purchase of a $1.5 billion stake in Epic Games. The companies will collaborate to create a “new universe of games and entertainment.” It will be associated with Epic Games’ flagship project, Fortnite.
The Verge does not rule out that access to the game universe can be obtained directly from Fortnite, similar to LEGO mode.
In the new universe, users will be able to play, watch videos, shop and interact with characters and stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and Avatar. The project will run on the Unreal Engine game engine.
According to Disney CEO Robert Iger, this is the company’s largest investment in the gaming industry.
