A person who feels unresponsive because they are ignored is prone to mental health problems as well as aggressive behavior. It is more difficult for such irritable people to maintain healthy relationships with others.
Scientists say that such people with a hostile attribution bias have brains that work differently. They show activity in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex when they encounter negative consequences for themselves from the actions of others. The ventromedial prefrontal cortex is responsible for human emotional reactions, decision-making, and self-perception, as well as for processing risk and fear.
58 people participated in the new study. They all listened to voices describing 21 hypothetical social scenarios. For example, in one of these podcasts, the professor forgot to write a letter of recommendation even though he promised to do so. Participants then rated the actions of people in the podcasts as hostile and intentional or unintentional.
All results of the study were published in the journal Neuroscience.
