Megafon has increased rates for its users. Many of them were unaware of this change. The rate increase could have been rejected, but not all users found the notice, Vedomosti writes.

Megafon inflated rates and angered subscribers

According to the operator’s representative, an SMS warning about the changes was sent to all affected subscribers. The information was also duplicated in the user’s personal account, he noted, adding that the changes could have been abandoned.

Prices for “personal” tariffs are formed by direct agreement between the operator and the client and may include preferential conditions. If the user did not follow the link or did not see the message, the rate was automatically modified without their consent.

The first user complaints were published by the Baza Telegram channel on February 7. Megafon subscribers threatened to appeal to Rospotrebnadzor and switch to competitors. Vedomosti sent a request to the FAS.

  • The FAS opened a case against the Megafon operator for increasing tariffs for communication services in September 2023. The company then justified this with an increase in costs and the department, in turn, pointed to the financial statements of PJSC Megafon, on the basis of which the operator significantly reduced costs and increased net profit.
  • In November, the antimonopoly service found that the telecommunications operator Megafon had violated antitrust laws due to the increase in tariffs for communication services.
