The observational study included 1.5 million adults from four countries (USA, UK, Canada and Norway). Scientists observed them for 15 years. It is known that smokers between the ages of 40 and 79 are almost three times more likely to die prematurely than those who have never smoked. In other words, they lose an average of 12-13 years of their lifespan.
At the same time, former smokers were able to reduce their odds of death by 1.3 times (or 30% or more) compared to never-smokers. Quitting smoking at any age was associated with longer life; Even people who quit smoking less than three years ago could live six years longer.
Scientists have found that quitting tobacco products reduces the risk of death from vascular diseases and cancer. Former smokers were also less likely to die from respiratory diseases.
