The Ministry of Digital Development intends to force Apple to allow the download of third-party applications in Russia. The corresponding bill is scheduled to be presented to the State Duma this spring.
Now the document is being finalized on the basis of the proposals of the presidential administration, head of the ministry Maksut Shadayev told Kommersant.
The bill was announced at the end of 2022: the head of the department then compared it to the Digital Markets Act (DMA) adopted in the European Union. The initiative was announced in the context of the removal of mobile applications from sanctioned Russian companies, mainly banks, from Apple and Google stores.
As Kommersant notes, all mobile system owners, device manufacturers and store operators will be subject to regulation and must ensure the installation of all applications on equal terms.
- Apple announced changes in the European Union in January to align its operations with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). They will come into effect in March 2024 after the release of iOS 17.4. It will be possible to download iOS apps from alternative app stores; The markets can be installed from their websites. Apple will approve stores and apps to keep users safe.
