A team led by Professor Xiuling Fan from China’s Zhejiang University published a study in the journal Nature detailing a new electrolyte formulation that addresses these limitations. Their innovation addresses three critical factors:

High ion conductivity ensuring efficient flow of charged particles inside the battery. This allows for faster charging and discharging.

Low solvation energy. This further increases conductivity by minimizing the energy required to separate lithium ions from solvent molecules.

The low melting point allows the battery to operate efficiently even at low temperatures, preventing performance degradation.

The researchers achieved this using a new solvent called fluoroacetonitrile (FAN). The findings show that FAN-based electrolytes enable batteries to achieve the trifecta of high energy density, fast charging, and a wider operating temperature range.
