They developed a method to automatically recognize irony in human speech using only audio and video information.

Irony is a subtle tool often used in daily life. It can express sarcasm, ridicule, or even disagreement. But for AI, irony is a tough nut to crack.

Traditional speech recognition systems cannot understand context and intonation, which play a key role in ironic expressions.

St. Researchers from St. Petersburg State University analyzed snippets of speech from Russian movies and TV series, and also recorded the speeches of 60 speakers. They examined how a person’s intonation, speech rate, gestures, and facial expressions change when they use irony.

As a result, scientists managed to identify the main features that distinguish ironic expressions from neutral expressions. These features can be used to train artificial intelligence systems.

Thus, artificial intelligence will now be able to understand not only the meaning of words but also how they are said.
