Sega Mega Drive Mini 2 Retro Console Announced, Includes Mega CD

Sega has announced the Mega Drive Mini 2. The retro console should cost about 70 euros. The manufacturer wants to provide the console with 50 pre-installed games as standard. This includes not only Mega Drive titles but also some Mega CD titles. There’s even an optional Mega CD add-on dummy.

The mini console was announced in a live stream in Japan. However, there will also be a version for the European and American market. In Japan, the console will be released on October 27. Some of the games that will be released with the retro console: Sonic CD, Thunder Force 4 and Virtua Racing. This includes the names of the Mega CD. As mentioned, a Mega CD add-on can be purchased, but this is clearly an add-on that doesn’t work for aesthetic purposes. Inside the mega CD drive is a miniature CD of Sonic The Hedgehog. The console contains a small cartridge dummy of Virtua Racer.

According to Sega, buyers of the retro console will find some Arcade ports and “mysterious, new projects.” The original Fantasy Zone was not released before the Mega Drive, but will still be present in the list of pre-installed games. This will be in the form of a port based on its successor, Super Fantasy Zone. To date, the following games have been announced:

• Magical Taruruto (Mega Rider)
• Fantasy Zone (new Mega Drive port)

The Sega Mega Drive Mini 2 is a response to rival Nintendo, which has released a second mini console with the SNES mini after the NES Classic Mini. Sega released the first Mega Drive Mini with 80 preloaded games in 2016. The company did this in partnership with AtGames. A variant of the original 16-bit Mega Drive was released in 2019.
