Yesterday, Amazon Prime Video announced the film Road House starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor.

The release of the remake, based on the 1989 film with actor Swayze, caused a lot of controversy. Initially it was assumed that the project would be shown in cinemas. However, Amazon subsequently acquired the rights to it and offered to publish the film in digital format on its streaming service.

The director of the remake, Doug Liman, decided to skip the premiere under protest because, according to him, this picture was shot and intended to be shown on large screens.

We have familiarized ourselves with the new product and are ready to answer basic questions about the film. How valid are the director’s arguments about the need for a wide release of his project? Is it really an entertaining film? Is the acting here convincing? Is the fight choreography cool?

First things first.

Here they rethought the film in a modern way

What is the movie about: The plot remains broadly faithful to the original – the protagonist is a judicially employed bouncer at a roadside bar, where he encounters a unique crime scene that leads to violent confrontations.

Remaking a genre classic starring Patrick Swayze was an ambitious endeavor. The original result, a combination of fisticuffs, bar culture and a philosophizing protagonist, is still adored by B-movie fans to this day.

In many ways, the new product retains the spirit of the original, but at the same time implies something new and fresh.

Firstly, context events updatedto reflect modern realities. There’s a strong emphasis on UFC fighting here, which is a departure from the original film and its aesthetic.

Secondly, the events are transferred to exotic and picturesque Florida with beautiful snow-white beaches and azure sea water. Remember that the film’s original story takes place in the small town of Jasper, Missouri. In the remake, fist fights in Hawaiian shirts look fresh and funny. Sort of beach vibe with fights in the evenings.

Thirdly, the story of the drama’s heroes with the transformation of their inner demons has become quite bland and easy to read. While the original is a concept of a simple action film with elements of melodrama, the remake tries to complicate the story by including not only the heavy drama of the main character, but even a corruption storyline.

It turned out controversial, I wanted more lightness, because from the film, first of all, you expect male fun. Well, you know what I mean!

There are great fights here that you dare to watch again

Doug Liman, famous for his work on the action thriller The Bourne Identity with Matt Damon, brings out elements of his unique fast-paced action shooting style in the new film. The fighting here is fast and merciless. There is no room for romance in these scenes – only severity with a slight touch of humor.

For example, before the start, one of the main characters will humorously confront his opponents about their international health insurance.

If you see the results in the film extreme getting in dragons, then you are at the right place.

Lyman made the fight scenes as dynamic and hair-raising as possible in the literal sense of the word! The fight choreography is gorgeous. How could it be otherwise, when you have such heavyweights on your team as the physically trained Jake Gyllenhaal and a real UFC fighter, you can give the scenes realism and entertainment. The final battle reveals their full potential, providing brutality to the viewer.

And most importantly: the operator has a great idea. His work can be compared, for example, with the theme that we saw in the film “The Raid 2”. Did you remember to show up in the kitchen? Now imagine her without knives, without a kitchen, but with McGregor madness. Although there was clearly some computer processing and splicing, one of the battle scenes still looks excellent.

A Crazy Antihero You’ll Love

Conor McGregor is a real gift to all fans of the “creativity” of this crazy fighter. Conor plays the role of an extremely dangerous and unpredictable thug who is hired by the film’s antagonist in order to stay with the main character.

Although this is McGregor’s film debut, his real-life UFC career and bad boy image in the sport became a hindrance to his character in the film. His appearance looked like a battle scene with special fire. On almost every stage he madness and destruction. And that’s great!

While McGregor’s acting skills carry the issues, his animal energy and graphics preparation add extra brutality and realism to the action, making it one of the most interesting aspects of the film.

The film has problems, but it’s still worth watching

At its core, the film retains the core premise of the original – the story of a noble, tough hero who fights villains, but seems to take action insufficiently. At times it’s boring, at times it stalls in dialogue. At the same time, closer to the finale, the creators managed to add boat chases and explosions, which led to an increase in local skirmishes to large-scale captures.

Modern Hollywood strives to make everything bigger, bigger and louder, using all available technological advances. “Road House” is a perfect example of this axiom. There are more events, more action, many times more madness and cruelty. But there was no room left for soul and romance.

In the 1989 film, Swayze is an idealized gentleman bouncer, while in the new film, Jake Gyllenhaal plays a more down-to-earth character. Realism is good, but where did the romance go? She will be sorely missed in 2024.

However, Doug Liman’s Road House is an interesting experiment in updating a classic action film for the modern, modern world. Young people will definitely like it, but the old generation will be compared with the original, and it’s far from a fact that the new film will be the winner.

However, one thing is certain: this exciting film will definitely be shown in cinemas. The decision of Amazon producers is controversial and criminal for this film.
