The fairy tale “The Flying Ship”, a film based on the 1979 cartoon of the same name by the Soyuzmult studio, was released in Russia.
We went to the premiere and were horrified.
The concern is not only that the movie can be characterized by the words “trash, frenzy and sodomy”, but also the fact that school holidays have begun. This means that many parents decide to entertain their children by going to the cinema. The producers’ approach to distributing such a “children’s” fairy tale these days seems absolutely irresponsible, especially since the film’s age rating is only 6+.
We want to warn you against watching this movie with children, and here’s why.
A puzzling scenario
What is the movie about?: The main plot of the film “The Flying Ship” begins with the fact that the king, faced with difficulties, decides to marry his daughter Zabava to Paul, the son of a rich boyar. However, Zabava meets Ivan, a simple sailor, and falls in love with him.
To conquer Zabava and overcome financial obstacles, Ivan goes to a magical forest for gold, where he finds friends and builds a flying ship to travel around the world with his beloved.
It would seem that the task of the director and screenwriter was simple: to choose any plot and enrich it, taking into account the nature of the characters and the dynamics of events. However, it seems that in order to achieve this goal, this project took the path of least resistance, presenting viewers with a creature that can hardly be called any successful reimagining.
The film presents the classic fairy tale in a new world, enriching it with modern elements and new characters that relate to the younger generation, which is also represented by the older ones who remember the original cartoon. But neither one nor the other will like the outcome.
The script of the film “The Flying Ship” poses questions that are difficult to resolve. Adequate dialogues are rare; the logic of the characters’ actions is so broken that children cannot understand what is happening on the screen and what actions can be considered real.
Instead of a heroic journey and the acquisition of fortitude, children are presented with the following series of meaningless actions and rash decisions of the main characters.
Music videos we didn’t ask for
The film is overloaded with musical numbers that do not take into account the development of the plot or characters at all. Just weird music videos that have virtually no connection to the characters or the plot of the story. You sit, look and don’t understand that it’s even here?
In the end, the use of modern tracks for no apparent reason only makes things worse, moving the film away from the original fairy-tale atmosphere.
The songs that were popular in the early 2000s turned out to be completely unfamiliar to young people. The children from whom these songs are formed, having never heard them, used these songs in nine children’s stories alone. pointless and ineffective.
But they managed to add references to modern pop culture to these musical inserts. For example, when meeting the princess and the sailor, it catches your eye. choreography from La La Land. For what? For whom?
Finally, the new arrangement of those same classic songs is completely disappointing. You definitely didn’t think to listen to this. As a result, we get a musical, songs that you just want to rewind.
Costumes and jewelry that cause gas.
Graphic design and costumes are permitted in the film. Everything is oversaturated with acidic colors to such an extent that the eyes get tired of the unbridled feast of colors.
The costumes resemble a ridiculous carnival, the taste and style of which were lost among the bad taste and garish weather. Well, the scenery itself can be painted like a pastry chef’s fantasy on prohibited substances. In addition, the palace in which the heroes are located for 50% of the running time turned out to be some kind of narrow colored corridor with columns.
At one point, the carnival changes to a scene from the 2000s nightclub title. He probably only needs strippers. All other adult elements are in place. That case when a six-year-old child asks you a lot of questions after watching Carnival, but you will be able to answer them uncomfortable.
And in general, elements of costumes, sets and general visual elements do not combine with each other and with the main theme of the film, creating a feeling of chaos. It all looks like a ridiculous attempt at a parody of Disney fairy tales dressed in eclectic kitsch. Be-taste-si-tsa!
Dialogues that hurt your ears
Even more disappointing is the way and what the characters in the film say. The characters’ characters resemble slang that is unacceptable for children’s films, with elements of foul language and rudeness. The filmmakers forgot that their work should not be cultural and positive in communication.
If you want to teach children modern primitive vocabulary or gop phrases, you are welcome to attend the session. Everyone else passes by.
Characters that are too scary
You can forgive the not-so-impressive acting and some mistakes in casting. I could imagine who it doesn’t happen to. We’re not expecting Oscar nominations here.
But the anthropomorphic image of the Nightingale the Robber and Baba Yaga can evoke a real sense of horror. On the one hand, you sit in bewilderment and think: is this grandma, grandpa or a transvestite, on the other hand – question the safety of the child’s psychological state after watching. Do you need it?
The actor’s performance in the role of Baba Yaga is special. It’s hard to even guess that we’re looking at a movie star who was just recently popular, and who is now even excluded from the credits. But Baba Yaga turned out to be too scary. This character can be described briefly but succinctly – kripota. Not everyone will be able to portray a character as vividly as if it were the family of Yuri Kuklachev in the role of several cannibals at once.
And in places “The Flying Ship” begins to resemble not a fairy tale, a thriller, or even a horror film. This makes me feel uneasy. It’s as if Baba Yaga came straight out of another part of a “Wrong Turn” horror film.
This is especially true for the gloomy scene with the oven – a kind of fairy-tale crematorium. The position turned out to be scary only for children, but in the end Even adults will feel uncomfortable.
In addition, the film removes all reasonable boundaries for family films. Endless fights, beatings and even satanic rituals about the bitter aftertaste raise questions about the leader of such personnel in films intended primarily for children.
Finally, we couldn’t understand why the male character is played by an actress and the female character by a man. In the realities of modern Russia, this looks bold and unsafe. Add to these men in hot pink suits, pink wigs and pink mustaches. Sounds like a five-year article.
As for the other characters, it seems that they simply did not understand who exactly they needed to play. For example, Zabava simply grimaces, is capricious, and we don’t see a single real living character.
Conclusion? Yes, it won’t happen, you already understood everything
The film feels like a missed opportunity to give new life to a beloved classic. The filmmakers just needed to do less hackwork. But they forgot that a children’s fairy tale should bring joy and positive emotions and teach actions.
The viewer will see mixed fairy tales, strange musical numbers, stupid jokes, transvestite shows, even frightening scenes of growing up and the work of transferred Skittles designers. You can’t mock little fragile minds like that.
Skip this extremely bad movie.
