The Bank of Russia has announced a new scheme to deceive citizens: attackers pose as tax officials and offer to file a tax return via a link. This is stated in the regulator’s message.
Join
How the new scheme works:
- A letter arrives by email, its recipients pose as tax officials and demand to file an income tax return; To do this, you must follow the link sent.
- After entering the page, the victim is asked to enter personal and bank card information (number, full name of the owner, three-digit code on the back) supposedly to identify the taxpayer.
- This is how scammers gather information to steal money. At the same time, the personal data received, adds the Central Bank, can be used for new deception attempts.
How to avoid being a victim of scammers:
- Do not respond to such letters: do not click on the links in the letter and do not provide personal and financial information.
- Remember that the tax authorities do not send emails about debts with an offer to pay them online. During the campaign, which will run from January 1 to May 2, 2024, citizens themselves will have to submit to the tax authority an income declaration for 2023, including income from the sale of property, shares and rental of property.
- You can find out the presence of debt through the “Taxpayer Personal Account” service.
