The feature discovered by researchers from Android Authority in Android 15 Developer Preview 2 is called “Adaptive Timeout”. The essence of the new “feature” is that if the user does not look at the screen for a while, the screen locks before viewing. default is 30 seconds and then the screen turns off.

This is also stated in the comments on the lines of code in Android 15 Developer Preview 2: “Automatically turns off the screen earlier if you are not using your device” feature. The front camera of the smartphone will probably be used for this, but it is not stated exactly how the technology works.

It is stated that “adaptive timeout” will not appear in the open source build, but will instead be part of the Android 15 builds for Pixel series smartphones. This makes it similar to Google’s Screen Attention feature, which is not open source as it is powered by the Android System Intelligence implementation.
