A team of scientists from the University of Buenos Aires has managed to develop a method that allows the activity of birds’ vocal muscles to be converted into sound signals. This was done thanks to electromyography.
The experiment involved the Greater Pitanga bird. The reason why this species was chosen is that it has very simple vocal muscles. The results of the study showed that birds actually sing in their sleep. They also see situations from everyday life: for example, they can play melodies used to protect territory. Maybe this is because they also defend their property in dreams.
