The results of a new study call into question the effectiveness of intermittent fasting or time-restricted eating (TRE). This is a popular weight loss method where you can eat at certain times of the day. It is believed to be an easier way to lose weight compared to counting calories.
As part of the study, scientists recruited 41 adult volunteers. Most participants were female, dark-skinned, obese and prediabetic. They were given food for two weeks.
Half the subjects had to eat everything within 10 hours; 80% of calories were consumed before 13:00. The other group eats within 16 hours and consumes at least half of their calories after 5 p.m. In general, daily calorie intake and nutritional composition of food were the same among people.
After three months, it turned out that participants in both groups had lost about the same amount of weight. For people in the time-limited group, this value was 5 pounds (2.3 kg), and for people in the other group, it was 5.7 pounds (2.6 kg). All subjects also experienced similar changes in blood sugar and blood lipid levels.
Experts generally say that reducing calorie intake is the most beneficial method for weight control.
