Experts suggested that the government monitor miners for excessive electricity consumption in apartments by remotely comparing actual consumption with declared consumption. They plan to impose fines on those who exceed energy consumption limits according to tariffs aimed at industrial enterprises, and not at the population as before. This will make it possible to deal with violators more effectively and simplify the process of proving their guilt.
Experts’ recommendations mean that fines for miners could reach significant amounts, measured in hundreds of thousands or even millions of rubles. Shadow cryptocurrency mining often causes power outages and system overload. This is especially noticeable in the southeastern part of the Siberian Unified Energy System, including the Irkutsk region, Buryatia and the Trans-Baikal Territory regions.
According to experts, increasing the capacity of data centers for cryptocurrency mining will lead to additional electricity consumption, which can lead to an increase in the load on the energy system by 33.2 billion kWh annually from 2026. Therefore, authorities are considering options to increase tariffs to encourage miners to move away from energy-scarce regions and reduce the risk of power supply problems.
