The Yungas Death Road is a 70 km long mountain road, which is considered one of the most dangerous roads in the world. If you decide to drive along it, at the beginning of the road you will come across warning signs and reminders of accidents that have occurred here. Locals are advised to pray before driving down the “road of death”.
The history of this place begins in the 1930s, when Paraguayan prisoners finished the construction of the road. The first few years, the route did not attract much attention, accidents here occurred less often than on other mountain routes. But over time, due to poor construction quality, the road in some places began to narrow and collapse. Today, some sections of the “death road” are 2-3 meters wide.
In 1983, the first great tragedy occurred here. A bus carrying about a hundred people fell off a cliff due to terrible weather conditions. It was a terrible tragedy for the entire country, since then the North Yungas road has been nicknamed the “road of death”.
This route is full of hairpin turns and slopes, landslides often occur, the road itself is slippery and dirty due to the wet weather. The situation is also aggravated by the weather, when fog forms on the road during the rainy season and plumes of dust rise during the dry season. According to statistics, about 300 people die every year on the “road of death”.
Despite its danger, this track is almost never empty. For locals it is the only way to get from the center of the country to the north, and for extreme tourists it is another way to get an adrenaline rush. Local tour companies organize bike tours along the Death Road, which are very popular. On such a hike you can admire the local landscapes and experience great fear in the narrowest sections of the route. But I would take a chance, because 18 people died during the bike tours.
