These insects originated in Asian cockroaches and eventually spread around the world along with humans.

In the 18th century, red cockroaches reached Europe, and later, thanks to the development of transportation and communications, they settled all over the world. Nowadays they can be found on every continent except Antarctica.

A study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that red cockroaches share a common genetic code in most regions. This indicates their recent origin and rapid spread.

A team of entomologists led by Qian Tan of the National University of Singapore compared the genetic material of cockroaches from 17 countries and found that red cockroaches arise from six major populations located in Korea, China, India, Indonesia, Eastern Europe and the United States.
