Within the scope of the “Legacy of Ladoga Depths” project, the search for artifacts from the 19th and 20th centuries in Lake Ladoga continues. This year, the divers were joined by archaeologists and marine geodesists. Since 2017, members of the expedition have been searching for lost church values in the waters of the island of Valaam using advanced scientific technologies.
During the evacuation from the Valaam Monastery in 1940, the bells of the St. Nicholas Monastery church sank to the bottom of the lake. Divers managed to find several sunken ships, two GAZ-AA cars and many other artifacts. Now experts from the Institute of Archeology and Marine Geodesy of the Russian Academy of Sciences are using multi-beam side-scan locators and magnetometers to find new objects on the bottom.
The search task is complicated by the fact that bronze bells are not magnetic and can be hidden in the ground. In 2023, electronic cartography of Lake Ladoga was updated and a multi-beam survey of the bottom topography was carried out, which made it possible to create three-dimensional models of objects. Archaeologists monitor compliance with modern techniques and ensure the safety of transportation of finds to the museum.
