Implantable stimulators are currently being used to treat chronic pain. The new model will help use them to restore muscle function in patients with nervous system disorders such as stroke and spinal cord injuries.
The model shows the location of groups of nerve cells (motor neurons) that control individual muscles. This information will allow doctors to more accurately target desired areas of the spinal cord and restore lost functions.
The researchers plan to refine the model and conduct additional studies to better understand how effectively stimulation helps restore muscle function.
