As the West’s technological competition with China intensifies, private sector funding marks a marked shift in support for clean research traditionally funded by CERN’s 23 member countries and observer partners such as the United States, according to media reports.

Charlotte Varakulle, CERN’s director of international relations, emphasized the importance of exploring different funding sources, including potential EU and private sector investments, as the LHC is due to reach operational life in the late 2030s.

Experts say it is “vital” to secure much-needed money for CERN’s new collider, with China proposing its own collider.
