Once known for its powerful graphics processors, 3dfx Voodoo was not widely used in laptops due to high power consumption and heat generation.

But 24 years after the launch of the Voodoo4 4500, an enthusiast created a modification called the “Voodoo 4 M4800”.

Simionescu designed a custom MXM board for the Voodoo VSA-100 GPU and connected it to the laptop via an MXM slot using an FPGA.

The test subject was a Dell Precision M4800 laptop with 4th generation Intel Core processors. Although this laptop is much newer than Voodoo’s products, it can still only run Windows XP.

Enthusiast also added overclocking capabilities and increased the memory from 32 MB to 64 MB. As a result, when overclocked to 192 MHz (from 166 MHz at the factory), it achieved 2035 points in the 3DMark 2001 SE test; this is one of the highest scores for a single VSA-100 chip.
