According to the study, consumption of plant-based UPFs was associated with a 7% increased risk of cardiovascular disease compared to consumption of unprocessed plant-based foods. Additionally, all types of UPF, including both plant and animal species, have been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and death.

Researchers call for revision of dietary recommendations to reduce UPF intake and encourage consumption of unprocessed plant foods. Despite health claims in marketing, plant-based UPFs may be associated with worse health outcomes, scientists note.
